Custo Barcelona is one of the most anticipated shows at New York Fashion Week. Fashionistas were shoving each other to get a glimpse of his new collection because Custo’s runway had this electrifying energy which carried through to his designs.

The Inspiration:

Under the name ‘Hairy Metal’, Custo Barcelona presented a collection where the indisputable protagonists were metallic sparkles. New York saw a strong, energetic and contemporary collection, in keeping with a new era. Bronze, steel, gold, black and rust comprise a new colour palette which is mixed with graphics inspired by mercury, melted silver, red hot iron and tin.

The cold of metal is contrasted with fake fur, which has been developed in every imaginable form. Hairs of different lengths and colours have been mixed together to create new graphic effects that are sinuous, geometric or crossed. Different types of furs have also been mixed with wools to match the colour graphics and produce volumes that create new depth.

A primitive looking collection that brings cold and warmth face-to-face. Of contrasting looks. Of melting metals. A veritable ode to the periodic table of elements. An invitation to experiment. A mysterious and spectacular show courtesy of Custo Barcelona, who has managed to surprise us once again.

Many braved the snow storm to attend Yuna Yang’s Fall/Winter 2010 collection.  Yuna Yang did not disappoint.  Her collection is delightful !!  It’s so refreshing to see so much color with different textures in one collection.

Yuna’s inspiration this season is the provocative style of 1920′s silent movie starlet Mary Louise Brooks.  Yuna’s interpretation of Ms. Brooks’ style is flirty, feminine yet strong.  Ms. Yang’s vision is to develop a couture quality yet ready-to-wear collection.  And, it was a success !!

Zang Toi’s Fall 2009 Preview – expect to see lots of PURPLE in his collection this season !!

DVF’s Spring 2010 Collection is for the free spirited traveler.   Bold prints which were safari-themed in bright colors dominated the runway.  Hobo bags which were equally bold and bright as the model’s outfit made a showing on some models.  Overall, the collection was a hit as it successfully showed sophisticated wearable pieces.

Vivienne Tam’s Spring 2010 Collection was bursting in 70′s inspired color.  The feel was reminiscent of the free spirit of that era with floor length fringe bags and flat strappy sandals.  Vivienne also added sophisticated embellishments like sequined vests for a modern twist.

This season’s theme is all about the Butterflies which can me seen in most of the prints including the Spring 2010 design of the HP Clutch.  Overall, the collection was fun and wearable but could be seen as dated if not accessorized properly.

For Spring and Summer 2010, Monique Lhuillier was inspired by the Masai Warriors of Kenya hence the intricate beadwork, draping and the safari prints.   The colors are strong with deep hues of blue, rust and yellow.

Monique’s presentation was a mix of cocktail dresses and long body hugging gowns reminiscent of the Halston silhouette.

For make-up, it’s bold eyes with a sleek pony tail – very strong and dramatic.

William Rast made its debut at Bryant Park with the New America collection which is all about leather and denim.   What stood out in the collection were the tailored jackets and fringed leather ankle boots.  The New America is Biker Chic  in the City !!

Betsey Johnson’s Prom Queen Collection is wearable art.  It’s nostalgic, dramatic with a modern twist which makes it a collection to be reckon with.

Betsey Johnson’s modern interpretation of classic prom dresses are shorter in length with bolder and brighter colors worn with 3 inch heels.  It’s a fun and memorable collection – a classic Betsey Johnson !!
